If you want a corkscrew thriller, Erica Spindler's (MIRA) June 2005 release leaves you spinning. In
Killer Takes All ex-detective Stacy Killian discovers the bodies of her neighbors. Are the women victims of the White Rabbit cult fantasy role-playing game?
Our ex-cop is in New Orleans to get away from crime and mayhem. But a series of murders interfere with Stacey's post-graduate studies and she's right back in the investigator's role. Leo Noble, a man with dark secrets and inventor of the violent and addictive game, hires lanky Stacey to uncover the players. As the murders mount, Stacey tangles with rookie detective, Spencer Malone, who's on a mission to prove his worth.
Spindler takes about 120 pages to get you into the game. If you're not a gamer, you'll understand it by page 200 or so, but you begin to wonder if the game will ever end. The plot has more twists and turns than,
well, a corkscrew. Stacey and Spencer agree to work together, cryptic notes keep them on the run, everyone is a suspect.
Finally they discover the White Rabbit killer. Oops, not yet. Oops again and again. When you learn who the real killer is, nearly every one is
dead - except Stacey and Spencer who have a lot of loving to do. And Billie,
oh, she's the coffee gal who actually lives her multiple fantasies. Too much, too long, too over the edge but interesting.
